enCOUNTER [24/7 window]
Craft Victoria
31 Flinders Lane, Melbourne

enCOUNTER is Craft Victoria's 24/7 window space. This month Philip Stokes Studio Glass is launching a new range of work called Urbaneyes.
Having moved my studio from the banks of the Yarra River bend to the inner city edge, I have become fascinated with the vibrant outdoor gallery on my doorstep. The series Urbaneyes is inspired by the vibrant and contrasting styles of street art and graffiti which adorn the streets of Cremorne and Richmond in a bombing of vividly contrasting colours.

"My fascination with the playfulness of this material and the necessity of the maker to improvise helped to shape these colourful forms. I am always engaged with the optical qualities of glass and its ability to illuminate light in vibrant hues of colour. I hope these amorphous solids raise a smile"! Philip Stokes.

Mercator Launch and Open Day
Sunday 18 April 2010, 12 – 4pm
Mercator, Abbotsford Convent, 1 St Heliers St, Abbotsford (via Gate 2)
Rescued from a life of quiet obscurity by a generous grant from the Sidney Myer Fund 2009 Commemorative Grants Program, the former ‘lower laundries’ on the eastern side of the Abbotsford Convent have recently themselves been given a really good scrubbing (along with some well overdue mending here and there). In a fascinating transformation that has revealed a surprisingly eclectic range of light-filled studio spaces, the Mercator building is now the much treasured home of a creatively industrious community.
The artists warmly invite you to explore, discover and come face to face with the intriguing, often mysterious practices that bring traditional hand crafts and contemporary culture into lively discussion.

For Art's Sake:
Our aim is to gather a truly significant collection of Australian Art for the “For Art’s Sake” Auction. The Auction will present art works across many mediums by internationally recognised artists from across Australia and New Zealand. Their generous and creative donations of art will be in a live auction raising funds which will go 100% directly to those affected by the 2009 Victorian bushfires.
As part of the Abbotsford Convent’s open day, the auction will take place in the Convent’s Linen and Community rooms. A preview of the artwork will be held at The Convent on Saturday the 7th of November from 2 – 4p.m. The auction room will be opening from 10:00 am for previewing on Sunday the 8th of November, with all artworks going under the hammer between 2pm and 4pm. Andrew Embling from Landmark is the auctioneer for this very special event.
Please browse the art works and pre-register your bid on line now before attending the live auction on Sunday the 8th of November from 2 to 4p.m. We hope that you are inspired to collect art at the For Arts Sake Auction and support Victorian Communities affected by the 2009 bushfires.
www.forartssake.com.au

About the Auction:
The For Art's Sake Auction is a fundraiser for the bushfire affected communities and an opportunity for the Abbotsford Convent community to work together on an exciting and fulfilling project. Not only will this event raise much needed funds for the recovery of rural communities, it will showcase new works by artists working at the convent and the broader arts community, bringing urban and rural communities together.
The idea was developed by James Thomson who lives and works as a glassmaker and artist in Rubicon, a town in the Murrindindi Shire, and Philip Stokes (Studio Glass). The idea was put to the Abbotsford Convent Community and strongly supported by both Artists and Organisations at the Convent by way of donation and with provision of professional services.
From the idea to the fruition this Auction has brought together creative minds as well as urban and rural communities. It has been thrilling to see the art community support this event and we hope that you in turn help communities in Victoria, affected by the bush fires of 2009 by buying art at the auction.
Note for auction items and placing a bid:
Pre-register your bid on line now before attending the live auction on Sunday the 8th of November from 2 to 4p.m. All on-line bids need to be verified and confirmed before being officially lodged on line and recorded for the auction day. All on-line bidding will stop at 5:00pm on Friday the 6th of November. All pre-bids will be confirmed prior to the live Auction on Sunday the 8th of November at 2:00p.m. All on-line bids must be confirmed and registered in person on the day of the auction by 2:00p.m or will become invalid.

With a background in theatre Philip finds that handling hot glass is surprisingly similar to the stage; Spontaneity, improvisation and chance are all elements that he enjoys and exploits, both in making and in the final installation. Philip’s latest works are playful groupings excited by fire and inspired by the dance and rhythms of life which are captured in the moment and remain in the colours and contours of the glass forever.
